01 September 2017 – 15th International Conference on Environmental Science and Technology (CEST) in Rhodes, Greece

Dr Kyriacos Themistocleous presented the EXCELSIOR Project at the International Conference on Environmental Science and Technology in Rhodes, Greece which is one of the worldwide leading environmental conferences on Friday, 1 September, 2017. During the presentation, he had the opportunity to  present the project to engineers, scientists, researchers, students, managers and other professionals and address the potential application of EXCELSIOR for emerging environmental issues, state-of-the art research and innovative technologies. During the conference, a wide range of topics were presented which addressed new opportunities for the emerging science-policy interface promoting the dialogue between the scientific and policy-making communities.

Prof. Diofantos Hadjimitsis, Vice Rector for Academic Affairs at the Cyprus University of Technology, presented the H2020 Teaming project “EXCELSIOR” at the Final Multiplier Event of INTRAPRISE project on 29th of August 2017. Participants of the event included high-level executives of local enterprises, consultants, academics, life-long learning trainers and post-graduate students. During the event, a wide range of topics related to Intrapreneurship were presented having as a common goal to increase employability, innovation, productivity, and performance in a period of serious economic challenges.

On the 18th of July 2017, Mr Marios Photiou (Space Segment Manager) and Eleftheria Hadjioannou visited ERATOSTHENES Research Centre at the Cyprus University of Technology and discussed various ways of collaboration between Avanti Hylas 2 Cyprus Ltd and CUT.

On behalf of CUT and the ERATOSTHENES Research Centre Prof Diofantos G. Hadjimitsis, Dr Christos Danezis, Dr Rodanthi Mammouri and Dr Argyro Nisantzi presented the activities of the group for the last 10 years as well the opportunities of the ‘EXCELSIOR’ Teaming project. Both sides agreed to collaborate in the area of broadband satellite communications and the relevant applications, as well as integration of various satellite technologies such as communications, navigations and earth observation.

Dr. Panayiotis Philimis (CEO) from CyRIC (Cyprus Research and Innovation Centre) visited ERATOSTHENES Research Centre and discussed with Prof. Diofantos G. Hadjimitsis and his team, research and development opportunities for the EXCELSIOR project. During the meeting (14/07/2017) both sides have agreed in strategic collaboration in areas of Research & Innovation and business opportunities of the proposed Centre of Excellence.

CyRIC is the only Business Innovation Center (EU-BIC) in Cyprus certified by European Business Network offering professional Research, Innovation and Business services with the mission to support the local development and growth of innovative entrepreneurs, start-ups and SMEs.

CyRIC is the major supporter of the EXCELSIOR project.

Dr Shimrit Maman, Research, Associate and Laboratory manager from the Earth and Planetary Image Facility (EPIF) of the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev visited the ‘Remote Sensing & Geo-Environment Lab’/ ERATOSTHENES Research Centre at the Cyprus University of Technology from 10th of July to 15 July 2017. During the visit Dr Shimrit Maman had the opportunity to come across with the various activities of the group for the last 10 years in the areas of earth observation. Based on the existing MOU between the two universities, it was agreed to further promote common activities between the two groups. Presentation of the EXCELSIOR Teaming project has been made by Prof. Diofantos G. Hadjimitsis. Dr Mammouri, Dr Nisantzi and Dr Themistocleous during the meeting with Dr Maman.

05-07 July 2017 – The PROTHEGO team fully supports the ‘EXCELSIOR’ project (Granada meeting)

PROTHEGO is funded in the framework of the Joint Programming Initiative on Cultural Heritage and Global Change (JPICH) – HERITAGE PLUS, under ERA-NET Plus and the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) of the European Commission, the project PROTHEGO aims to make an innovative contribution towards the analysis of geohazards in areas of cultural heritage in Europe. PROTHEGO applies novel space technology based on radar interferometry (InSAR) to monitor monuments and sites in Europe which are inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List (WHL) and are potentially unstable due to geohazards. Partners include: CUT- The Cyprus University of Technology, Remote Sensing and GeoEnvironment Lab / Eratosthenes Research Centre, ISPRA – Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (Italy), NERC – Natural Environment Research Council (UK), UNIMIB – University of Milano-Bicocca (Italy) and IGME – Geological Survey of Spain.

Presentation of the ‘EXCELSIOR’ Teaming project by Prof. Diofantos Hadjimitsis, Dr Christiana Papoutsa and Dr Kyriacos Themistocelous at Pissouri Village in Cyprus during the final stakeholders meeting of the ‘Cascade’ FP-7 project. The National Event of Cascade Project was hosted by the Community Council of Pissouri in Paphos aiming to present the final results of the Cascade Project to the stakeholders, public authorities and farmers in Cyprus. The members of the Remote Sensing and Geo-Environment lab of the Eratosthenes Research Centre explores the high importance of using earth observation, Radar techniques and UAV’s for monitoring degraded areas due desertification and overgazing in Eastern Mediterranean region and especially in Cyprus.

21 June 2017 – Promotion of EXCELSIOR at the ‘DECAT’ meeting in Spain

During the 4th coordination meeting of the DECATASTROPHIZE project in Alcala de Henares (Madrid) in Spain during 21st and 22nd of June 2017, the team members of the CUT group promotes EXCELSIOR. DECATASTROPHIZE is directly related to EXCELSIOR since it aims in using geo-spatial decision support systems for rapid deployment, interoperability, transferability and sustainability to assess disasters and environment al incidents by using existing models/systems in a synergic way on one multi-platform. As a result, EXCELSIOR was disseminated among DECAT’s partners and was met with enthusiasm by many of the organizations. DECAT project is coordinated by the ‘Remote Sensing and Geo-Environment Lab/Eratosthenes Research Centre’.
